Masachist: Death march fury

30/03/10  ||  Wooderson

Recording “Death March Fury” had to be a bit unnerving for the members of Masachist as they’ve all achieved success or at the very least, moderate success in their other projects. I’m not saying they lost sleep over this fact but I would think their expectations would be to produce a solid death metal release that can stand on its own. Initially, I’m sure you’ll compare this band to their other bands (past and present) but isn’t that to be expected with these all-star type groups? So who’s exactly in Masachist you ask? Here comes the name dropping; Wojciech “Sauron” Wąsowicz (ex-Decapitated), Dariusz “Daray” Brzozowski (ex-Vader, Vesania, Dimmu Borgir), Thrufel (ex-Yattering, Azarath), Heinrich (Vesania) and Aro (Shadows Land).

As I’m sure you’ve already figured this out, Masachist hail from Poland and once again, that country unleashes another wonderful monstrosity to the death metal world. Solid from start to finish, Masachist serves us a brutal helping of fast, technical death metal and with only one song reaching the 6 minute mark and the balance coming in under 3 1/2 minutes, they just want to fuck your shit up and get out. You would think that with the songs being as short as they are, they would all be non-stop blastfests and for the most part, you’re correct. However; Masachist also know when to add a bit of breathing room and this evident in almost every track. They keep things fresh with some nice tempo changes and on occasion they’ll stop on a dime and bludgeon your metal loving cranium into oblivion with a few slower, crushingly heavy riffs like on “Open The Wounds” which by the way features Ross Dolan from Immolation for all you fanboys.

Pig’s vocals are just excellent and it’s fantastic to see him back in action again. He comes off more raspy than guttural which is exactly how I like my death metal vocals – awesome! Riffs consist of straight ahead death metal scriptures along side some fairly discordant action which keeps things fresh. Thrufel has some chops and his solos are short, to the point and performed with skill and finesse and never come across as noodly, wankery bullshit. Daray’s drumming is just as impressive here as his accomplishments in Vader. It’s tight, aggressive and just an all around stellar performance.

Ya know, there really isn’t much more to say about “Death March Fury” as when you look at who’s in the band, you pretty much know what to expect and they deliver on all levels. This is a high quality death metal release filled with blasts, superior vocals and just a shitload of kickass riffs. Buy this fucker!
